Paradise Revisited

Estonian Museum of
Applied Art and Design

Kristel Saan’s solo exhibition “Paradise Revisited” reflects Saan’s extensive practice as an artist and designer. In the installation, the natural and the man-made merge – where the past and the future, the familiar and the unknown intertwine into one.

The title of the exhibition refers to reappearance and depiction, it refers to remembering. It is the creation of something that is a goal or an aspiration … maybe a dream, perhaps an ideal. There is a wholeness in Saan’s work; the objects have deliberately been highlighted, brought out of something. Through the presentation the unique moment has been stopped, but maybe it was all an illusion. The design of the “Paradise Revisited” exhibition hints at a mystery – the walls covered with heavy fabric bring the objects closer to each other – they now belong together. Is it intoxication from something forbidden, perhaps beauty, or the dark shadow of it?

In her work, the artist has used many organic materials, such as clay, wool, freshwater pearls and wood. The pure and fresh motives in her work are similar to the rhythms found in nature, based on repetition, interruption and adaptation. The word ‘Paradise’ in the title signifies, above all, a spiritual journey – a search for a connection with oneself. It is an embracing and intimate dialogue with the environment that has shaped us.
